LEAD — Innovative training develops inspirational leaders who increase business performance


A lead­ing UK retail­er had reor­gan­ised its man­age­ment account­ab­il­it­ies and struc­tures. Recognising that train­ing had, until now, been react­ive, the com­pany asked Elizabeth to help cre­ate a coordin­ated approach to lead­er­ship devel­op­ment and train­ing as a whole, focused on busi­ness need. This would optim­ise indi­vidu­al per­form­ance and there­fore improve busi­ness per­form­ance.

Working closely with the HR dir­ect­or, the head of train­ing and the in-house train­ing team, Elizabeth helped re-engin­eer the entire train­ing pro­gramme to focus every train­ing activ­ity on a spe­cif­ic busi­ness object­ive. In par­tic­u­lar, power­ful new lead­er­ship train­ing was needed to give seni­or lead­ers the skills to inspire, dir­ect and enable oth­ers. Elizabeth also coached and ment­ored the company’s seni­or lead­er­ship team to meet ongo­ing busi­ness chal­lenges and object­ives. To ensure that the impact of the train­ing was sus­tained, she developed and empowered the company’s train­ing team to deliv­er and evolve the pro­gramme in the longer term.

As a res­ult, 80% of those attend­ing this pres­ti­gi­ous lead­er­ship devel­op­ment pro­gramme achieve pro­mo­tion. Return on invest­ment into the busi­ness is meas­ured as part of the pro­gramme. The com­pany has uniquely high reten­tion rates for its industry and employ­ee sat­is­fac­tion remains high. During the peri­od after the pro­gramme was intro­duced, like-for-like sales are double its com­pet­it­ors. The train­ing pro­gramme sub­sequently won a National Training Award.
